Katirli
Katirli was built in two phases in collaboration with the Greek Refugee Settlement Commission. One hundred and six houses had been built by July 1928. The Commission provided an additional one hundred in September 1930. Most residents came from Katirli in the Sea of Marmara, Nicomedia, Bithynia, Chili, Constantinople, and Eastern Thrace. Almost all the houses were duplexes. Most of the inhabitants were sailors, shipbuilders, and fishermen, but there were also many merchants, labourers, carpenters, engineers, and bakers. The settlement church was built between 1932 and 1938. The vast majority of Katirli’s family heads were literate, and the community supported two local associations: the “Pankatirliotiki Enosis” and the “Association Katirlioton”. The children went to school in Kalamaria and Aretsou.
