Church of the Taxiarches in Kouri

A shack dedicated to the Taxiarches (the Archangels Michael and Gabriel) initially stood on the site of the future church. The icon was considered miraculous and had come from Asia Minor with the refugees. A procession took place on the evening of the Archangels’ feast day. It was a glorious celebration attended by the band of the Aristotelis Foundation and a bishop while the cantor of the Metropolis directed the choir. The parishioners were primarily poor sailors and fishermen and could not financially support the church. The ecclesiastical committee tried to secure the necessary funding through a fundraiser in local coffee shops, but the Metropolis of Thessaloniki disapproved of the measure. The committee then turned to ministers and highlighted their political achievements and religious fervour. The foundation ceremony finally took place on June 20, 1950. The residents of Derkon joined the same parish and contributed to the church’s upkeep.
