The Monument to the Dead of World War II

The Monument to the Dead of World War II was created by the Thessalonian artist Kyriakos Kampadakis and placed in Skra Square in 1981. It presents a woman who has been deformed by hunger, misery, fire, and the hardship of war. It is a cry against war and its devastating consequences for humanity. Kampadakis is influenced by surrealism, expressionism, and abstraction to offer a reclining human figure as she expires.

Geometry and abstraction define the copper sculpture. The lifeless body lies on a marble base with the names of the residents of Kalamaria who lost their lives during the Second World War.
