Photography Museum “Christos Kalemkeris”
The Photography Museum “Christos Kalemkeris” was founded in 2001 as a Legal Entity under Public Law of the Municipality of Kalamaria to protect and promote the rich collection of Christos Kalemkeris.
Christos Kalemkeris was born in Thessaloniki in 1930. His parents were refugees from Asia Minor, and he grew up in Kalamaria. He started working as a confectioner, but he soon turned his attention to the collection of historical photos of his homeland. His archive includes unique photographs from the early days of photography to the present day. The collection of albums and pictures of the Greek railway network, the antiquities of the Greek world, and the military adventures of the modern Greek state (Balkan Wars, First World War, Second World War) are comprehensive and particularly important. Other sections cover portraits, landscape, folklore tradition, and photographs or postcards from Constantinople and Smyrna.
